2-on-1 with Georgina Bloomberg

Like the rest of us, our idols pull on their breeches one leg at a time.  Occasionally, we get personal with one of them.
Georgina Bloomberg is a household name for those who have spent substantial time in New York City, and anyone considered to be an avid showjumping fan. However, despite her long list of accomplishments in the saddle (including earning a bronze medal at the 2015 Pan American Games, as well as being a 2017 Longines Ladies Awards Recipient), she’s known as much for her tireless philanthropic efforts and devotion to animal welfare as she is for her outstanding skills on horseback. As a mother, the founder of The Rider’s Closet (a nonprofit that ensures the availability of riding clothes to therapeutic programs, pony clubs, and individual riders in need), and the author of The A Circuit book series for young adults, Georgina is a busy woman. Of course, these are all facts that can be gleaned from her website, so we asked her a few questions for which the interweb didn’t have the answers (until now), and were thrilled to get to know our idol, neighbor, and fellow horse-lover on a more personal level…especially because many of her answers had us nodding our heads and saying, “Same!”

If you could travel somewhere that did NOT involve a horse show where would it be?

I’m dying to go to Mexico. Coincidentally, the time I may be able to go this year is for a horse show…

You drop a quarter in the juke box to listen to…
Aerosmith or any 90’s one hit wonder.

Your greatest fear is…
Anything that involves my son’s safety or well being being in danger.

The first thing you think of when you wake up in the morning is…
What I have to do for the day, followed by how much I can get accomplished before my son wakes up and commands all my attention.

The best gift you ever received was…
My son was a Christmas baby so he would have to be it. After that I would say the vegetable garden my boyfriend planted in my backyard this past year for Christmas.

The best gift you ever gave was…
I do gifts for children and teens in need every holiday season through New York Cares, and I work really hard to get them exactly what they want. Every year, these are the most rewarding gifts to give and the ones I work the hardest on getting right, so to me they are the best gifts I give and bring me the most satisfaction and joy.

Your #1 pet peeve is…
I’ll be honest, I have a lot. But probably people who walk or talk really slowly. I’m from New York!

If you were not a professional rider you would be a…
Anything with art and design. My dream job is a jewelry designer.

What is your greatest indulgence?
Reality TV. I am addicted and spend way too much time keeping up with all the good shows out there.

Which talent would you most like to have?
I would love to be a good singer.

What is your most treasured possession?
My blankie. My parents gave it to me when I was born and I still at 35 try to sleep with it every night. I have no shame in admitting it. I can sleep without it but I don’t like to and choose not to.

What is your life’s mantra, or a phrase you use often?
Keep your eyes on the stars and your feet on the ground.

Any advice to your 20-something year-old self?
Appreciate your 20s more. Don’t be so serious or mature, and travel to all the places you want to see in the world before you have children.

You have to quickly teach us something we don’t know.  What is it?
About how smart and clean pigs are. My rescue pig, Wilbur, made me a fierce advocate of not eating them and telling people all the reasons why no one ever should!

A show jumper, a dressage rider, and an eventer walk into a bar, what happens next?
When this happens at a bar we all drink, have fun, and get along. Anywhere else, we avoid and judge each other.
